IT infrastructure

When the inventory system turns sluggish or the server starts showing its age, the reflex is to open a reseller's catalogue: a new box, faster drives, more RAM. Quite often that is the most expensive answer available. Apply first establishes what you really own, where things get stuck and why, and only then recommends what is worth paying for. The fix might be a database setting, a different storage layout or a virtual desktop for the people working from home. We do all of it remotely, and we have no hardware to sell you.

Measure first, decide second

Nothing changes on day one. We gather data, explain what it tells us and then carry out only what you sign off. The whole process runs over remote access.

01

Collect data

A lightweight agent records load for two to three weeks, ideally spanning a month-end close. That way we see real peaks rather than a quiet Tuesday morning.

02

Trace the connections

Which service relies on which? It is not unusual to find the scanner still dropping PDFs onto a share on the old server that everyone believed was switched off.

03

Weigh the actions

Each finding is scored for risk, benefit and effort in hours. At a glance you can tell what needs doing now and what fits next year's budget.

04

Implement or hand over

Either we carry out the work in agreed maintenance windows or your existing provider takes the list and does it. Anything physical is done by your own staff, guided by us.

Desktop PC or virtual workplace?

Virtual desktops do not suit every job. This comparison shows where they shine and where a conventional computer remains the better pick.

Option 1

Local PC

Software and files live on each person's own machine, the way most offices have worked for decades.

Set-up cost
Low, the hardware already exists
Laptop left on the train
Possibly a personal data breach you must report to the DSB
New colleague on Monday
Order, ship and configure a device first
Working offline
Possible
CAD, BIM, video editing
Full power of the local graphics card

Option 2

Virtual workplace

The desktop runs in a data centre. Your device merely displays the picture and passes on keyboard and mouse input.

Set-up cost
Higher, cloud computing power is a monthly bill
Laptop left on the train
There is no data stored on it
New colleague on Monday
Access within an hour, even on a personal device
Working offline
Not possible
CAD, BIM, video editing
Only practical with costly GPU instances

Day to day

Who suits which model

Mixing both is perfectly normal: part of the team goes virtual while the rest keep their computers.

Local PC
Small, settled team in one office
Virtual workplace
Seasonal staff, branches, teleworking
Hybrid set-up
Design work local, back office virtual

Most speed problems are not hardware problems. The culprits we keep finding: an antivirus product scanning every database file on every read; a file share still reached over an outdated protocol; a volume sitting at 95 % capacity; a nightly backup that drags on into the late morning. Each of these can be cured remotely, and none of them goes away with a new server.

Frequently asked questions

That comes down to software. If your accounting or industry package is available as a cloud edition and documents can move to SharePoint, the server is frequently redundant. If an application only runs when installed locally, your internet line is weak or a customer insists that data stays on the premises, keeping it may still make financial sense. The health check compares both routes with five-year costs.

It is actually the ideal split. Your dealer supplies and mounts equipment, your electrician pulls cables and swaps components, and Apply handles configuration, documentation and ongoing checks remotely, giving both of them precise instructions. Nobody bills you for a long drive.

No. A sensible start is one clearly defined group: seasonal reception staff at a hotel in Tyrol, an accounts team that works from home two days a week, or a small branch without IT of its own. People at an engineering consultancy working in CAD or BIM normally stay on their workstations.

Schemes such as KMU.DIGITAL and digitalisation grants from the federal provinces exist, although their terms change regularly. Whether your project qualifies, and what is required of the adviser, is best confirmed directly with the Austrian Economic Chamber or your province's funding body. We cannot promise that a grant will be approved. We are happy, however, to prepare the quote, scope description and report in a form you can attach to an application.

Through an encrypted remote-support tool with individual accounts and a second authentication factor. Each session is logged and you can cut off access whenever you like. A GDPR data processing agreement is in place before the first connection.

How healthy is your infrastructure?

Give us the number of workstations, servers and sites. Within one working day we will suggest a starting point and an estimate of the hours involved.
