PC clean-up and malware removal

Picture a joinery workshop in the Mühlviertel with a single office PC. It is where quotes get typed, CAD drawings get opened and invoices go out to the tax adviser. For a few weeks now it has taken fifteen minutes to become usable each morning, the browser keeps offering prize draws and an unfamiliar icon has appeared in the taskbar. Virus, failing disk, or simply ten years of accumulated software? From the outside nobody can tell, and deleting things at random often breaks more than it fixes. So we start by looking properly, copy the important files somewhere safe before touching anything, and then work through the machine step by step. Everything happens over a remote session: the person at the desk starts it, watches every click and can end it whenever they like. Nobody has to carry the computer anywhere.

Everything this covers

Every machine is cluttered in its own way. Even so, we always go through the points below, because together they give a complete picture and nothing slips past.

Settle the details with an engineer

Taking stock

Event log, the disk's SMART values, startup entries, scheduled tasks and installed programs sorted by install date. The date the problems began frequently points straight at the cause.

Backup before intervention

Before we remove a single file, documents, desktop and browser bookmarks are copied somewhere safe, such as OneDrive or an external drive. Anyone who never had a backup gets one set up on the spot.

Hunting malware

An offline scan with Microsoft Defender that runs before Windows loads, followed by a second, independent check. Suspicious files go into quarantine rather than straight to the bin, so we can work out what they were doing.

Browsers and notifications

Extensions, hijacked search engines and the easily overlooked push notifications from websites dressed up as virus alerts. We clear them out of Chrome, Edge and Firefox alike.

Space and speed

Leftovers from old Windows updates, bloated temp folders, duplicate downloads and outdated drivers. Afterwards we re-measure boot time and memory use so you can see the improvement in numbers.

Accounts and credentials

If the malware may have captured passwords, we change them from a clean device, sign out open Microsoft 365 sessions and check the mailbox for hidden forwarding rules.

Lasting protection

Updates switched back on, Defender with ransomware protection for document folders, Office macros from the internet blocked, and a standard user account for daily work instead of admin rights.

Our working method

Businesses without an ongoing contract pay €110 per hour plus VAT. Private clients pay from €69 incl. VAT per session and €99 incl. VAT for each further hour.

01

A short message

Which computer, what looks wrong and since when? If you suspect malware, unplug the network cable or turn off Wi-Fi, but leave the machine running.

02

Remote session

You open a link, approve access and stay nearby. We record our findings and secure your data first.

03

Clean-up and hardening

We remove what does not belong, tidy up and apply the protective settings. Longer jobs are scheduled for a time when nobody needs the PC.

04

Handover

A brief report with findings, changes, before-and-after measurements and an honest view on whether further spending on the machine still makes sense.

If you suspect encryption, pull the cable but do not restart. When files suddenly carry odd extensions or a ransom note appears, disconnect the computer from the network straight away but keep it switched on. A reboot can wipe traces in memory that help the analysis. Let us know and check whether other devices or shared drives are affected. For a company device we also help you decide whether the Austrian Data Protection Authority or CERT.at needs to be notified.

Frequently asked questions

Sometimes, yes, particularly with stubborn infections or a thoroughly mangled system. A reinstall, though, means setting up every program, licence, printer and preference again, which on an office PC running specialist software can easily eat a whole day. Once we have the diagnosis we tell you which route costs less.

Typical signs are a fan that never stops even with nothing open, a warm case and a computer that stays noticeably sluggish while idle. Task Manager often shows one process with a bland name hogging the processor. These programs rarely steal data, but they prove the door was open for something worse.

We cannot take remote control of an Android phone or an iPhone the way we can with a PC. We can, however, walk you through checking apps, profiles and account settings on a video call and tell you when a factory reset is the safer choice.

A computer with internet access, about an hour and a message to support@apply.at. The session costs from €69 incl. VAT, paid in advance via a link. You stay present throughout and can end the connection at any time.

We work on programs and settings and do not open documents without your consent. Each session is logged. With business clients we sign a data processing agreement under the GDPR before the first connection.
