Shopify and other platforms

Asking which shop system is best gets you nowhere in the abstract. The answer more or less falls out once four numbers are known: how many products, how many orders a month, which countries you ship to and which software runs your accounts. Take a pumpkin seed oil producer in southern Styria with thirty products who wants to be live before Christmas, and an electrical wholesaler in Upper Austria with 15,000 items, tiered pricing and a link to Mesonic WinLine. The oil producer gets to market quickly and cheaply with Shopify. The wholesaler needs Shopware or another solution where the business controls server, data model and code. We work through those questions with you before anyone recommends a platform.

Everything this covers

The service covers both the decision and the build. You can also commission the comparison alone and build the shop yourself or with another agency.

Settle the details with an engineer

Requirements, not a wish list

We record what the shop must do on day one and what can wait: variants, vouchers, subscriptions, customer groups, trade prices, several languages, delivery to Germany and Switzerland.

Three-year cost comparison

Base fees, transaction charges, paid apps, hosting, maintenance effort and licences such as the Shopware editions in a single table, calculated with your order volumes rather than a demo store.

Checking the integrations

Is there a maintained connector for your accounting package (BMD, RZL, Business Central) and your shipping tool, or does one need building? That question often matters more than the design.

Set-up on the chosen platform

Theme adjustments, product data, VAT rates of 20 % and 10 %, eps, cards, Klarna or PayPal, shipping with Austrian Post, DPD or GLS and the legal texts required for distance selling.

Headless only for good reason

A custom front end on top of Shopify or Shopware pays off with very high traffic or unusual content. For most smaller firms it costs more to run, and we say so plainly.

You own the accounts and data

Shop account, payment provider, domain and app subscriptions are in your company name. Products and orders can be exported as files at any time.

Our working method

The comparison itself usually takes two to three weeks. The build depends on the size of the range and the number of integrations.

01

Gather the figures

On a video call we go through your range, order numbers, target markets, payment methods and current software. Where figures are missing, we estimate ranges together.

02

Comparison and recommendation

You receive a side-by-side view of two or three suitable platforms showing cost, effort and risk, plus a clear recommendation with the reasoning behind it.

03

Prototype with real data

On the chosen platform we create a few of your trickiest products, for instance those with many variants or tiered prices, and run a complete order through.

04

Build and launch

Shop build, import of the full range, test orders with real payments, staff training over video and go-live on a quiet weekday.

Subscription add-ons rarely appear in the first budget. With Shopify, most capabilities missing from the core are bought in as separately billed apps: reviews, product filters, invoices that meet Austrian requirements, subscriptions. A mid-sized shop easily ends up with eight to twelve of them, and the monthly bill lands well above the base plan. Shopware and WooCommerce have extension costs too, often as annual licences. We price all of this against your real feature list.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily, but it needs its own server or suitable hosting and regular updates. With a small range and no complex pricing, Shopify or WooCommerce is usually simpler. Shopware comes into its own with large catalogues, trade features and several sales channels.

Yes, with some effort. Products, customers and orders can be exported, passwords usually cannot. Design, apps and special features have to be rebuilt. That is why it pays to plan for around three years of growth when making the first choice.

JTL is widespread in German-speaking markets, especially among retailers who also sell on marketplaces such as Amazon or Kaufland.at and need stock management. If that describes you, we include JTL in the comparison.

eps can be added to Shopify through suitable payment providers. Which methods are available in your set-up and what they cost is part of the comparison, as it has a noticeable effect on total cost.

Which platform suits your shop?

Give us a rough product count, monthly orders and the name of your accounting software. We will come back with any questions still open for the comparison.
