Dedicated servers

Certain workloads simply dislike company. Picture a freight forwarder in Wels whose warehouse system spits out hundreds of pick lists at 5:30 in the morning for the first delivery rounds, or a parts supplier in Upper Austria whose ERP crunches material planning overnight. On shared infrastructure, their performance also depends on whatever the provider's other tenants are up to at that moment. A dedicated server takes that variable away. It is an entire physical box in a hosting facility, rented month by month, whose processors, memory and drives serve nobody but you. The facility looks after power, cooling and faulty components; we take care of the operating system, databases, backups and security from a distance. You buy no equipment, and nobody from your side ever needs to visit a server room.

Everything this covers

Two parties share the responsibility for a dedicated machine: the facility for metal and electricity, us for everything running on top. What matters is that the dividing line is written down.

Choosing the model

CPU, memory and drives follow the measured load of your systems, not a price list. NVMe storage when the database keeps waiting on disk, extra RAM when reports are calculated in memory.

Facility and paperwork

Located in Austria or elsewhere in the EU, with dual power and network feeds, contractually fixed turnaround for part swaps, and a processor agreement that slots into your GDPR documentation.

Drive array and remote console

A RAID layout suited to the workload, the OS, an internal network linking several machines, and out-of-band console access that lets us in even if the server will not boot.

Several systems on one box

With Proxmox or Hyper-V the hardware can be split into virtual machines: inventory system, file shares and terminal server neatly separated, each with its own resources and maintenance slot.

Network and firewall

A firewall in front, VPN access for branch offices and home workers, and separate networks for management and applications. Only approved services can be reached from outside.

Copies and a standby box

A daily backup to external storage that cannot be deleted early. If an hour of downtime costs more than a second machine, we add a replicated standby.

Day-to-day running

Updates, watching drive and RAID health, reporting faults to the facility, checking things after every part swap, and a yearly look at whether size and cost still add up.

Our working method

Timing depends mainly on how soon the provider can supply the model. We run through the entire move once as a rehearsal before a real date is set.

Load profile

We log CPU, memory, disk and network activity on your existing systems for a week, ideally including a month-end close or a stocktake.

Basis for a decision

One or two models with rent, licences and management spelled out, set against the cost of a large VPS. You choose on evidence rather than gut feeling.

Build and rehearsal

A complete installation followed by a practice migration with a stopwatch running. The time it takes defines the switch-over window, always after hours.

Cut-over and handover

Move to the new machine, sign-off with your main users, then normal operation with monitoring and a patch schedule.

Licences can outprice the hardware. Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server are usually licensed by processor core. A machine with twice the cores may look like a bargain on rent yet double your licence bill, even though your inventory software never uses the extra cores. So we always price rent and software together, and we often recommend a box with fewer but faster cores.

Frequently asked questions

Common models are often provisioned within a few working days, while special configurations can take several weeks. Including the rehearsal migration, plan on two to four weeks until go-live.

Monitoring flags the fault, we open a ticket with the facility, their staff swap the drive and we watch the array rebuild. The server keeps running meanwhile. Bear in mind that RAID only guards against hardware faults, not deletions or ransomware; the off-site backup covers those.

That is called colocation. It is possible, but it involves racking, cabling and replacing parts on site, which we do not do, so you would need a local partner for it. Renting spares you all that, since the facility owns and maintains the hardware.

First we transfer everything to the new target system and delete it from the old server. How the facility then handles the drives, and whether it issues a deletion certificate, is something we clarify with the provider in advance. If you receive one, it goes into your data protection records.

Monday to Friday, 8:00-17:00 Austrian time (CET/CEST), within your plan's response time: 4 hours on Start, 1 hour on Business, 15 minutes on Premium. Premium clients additionally receive a 24/7 on-call number, set out in their contract.
