S3-compatible object storage

An engineering practice in Innsbruck accumulates, year after year, material nobody opens daily yet nobody is allowed to throw away: permit drawings, BIM models of completed projects, point clouds from surveys, photo logs from building sites. The NAS in the office is ninety per cent full, and its only copy lives on a USB drive on the very same shelf. Object storage tackles both issues together. It is cloud capacity accessed by software rather than by people clicking through folders, whether that is backup tools, an online store holding tens of thousands of product photos, a document management system or your own applications. It expands almost indefinitely, and the bill reflects only what you occupy. Its most valuable feature, though, is object locking. Once data is locked, nobody can alter or erase it before a chosen date, not an administrator and certainly not an intruder armed with stolen passwords.

Everything this covers

A bucket takes seconds to create. Whether it saves you on a bad day comes down to lock periods, key permissions and whether nightly jobs really make it across.

Settle the details with an engineer

Comparing total cost

Exoscale with its Vienna site, Hetzner, IONOS, OVHcloud or the EU regions of the big clouds: we put price per terabyte, retrieval fees, location and Object Lock support side by side in one table.

Separate buckets

Backups, archive and application files never share a bucket. Each has its own encryption, its own access policy and one line of documentation explaining its purpose.

Object Lock in compliance mode

You decide how long backups remain untouchable, 30 days for instance. During that time nobody can remove or overwrite them, including us and including an attacker with admin rights.

Hooking up existing tools

Veeam, Acronis, restic, Synology Hyper Backup, Microsoft 365 backups or a store's media folder are linked to the storage. We verify that jobs do not merely start but run to completion.

Least-privilege keys

Each system receives its own credentials. Backup software may write but never delete. Keys are rotated periodically and kept in your company's password vault.

Automatic storage tiers

Older data drifts into cheaper classes by itself, and expired data disappears according to your retention rule. Nobody has to diarise a clean-up of old backups.

Our working method

The configuration is quick. With several terabytes, though, the first upload may run for days depending on your line.

01

Data map

What data, how much of it, how often it is copied, how long it must be kept and how fast it has to be available again after an incident.

02

Configuration

Account registered to your business, buckets, encryption, lock periods, keys and tiering rules, all summarised on one data sheet.

03

Initial upload

Backup software or application connected, the first run supervised, and the daily runs that follow checked.

Restore drill

We retrieve individual files and, if relevant, a complete machine. Only when that succeeds is the job signed off.

Backups and archives serve different purposes. A backup exists to recover the last good state after something goes wrong and may lapse after a few months. An archive preserves closed records unchanged for years, such as bookkeeping documents that Austrian tax rules oblige you to retain for seven years. Lump the two together and you either pay to keep backups forever or lose records because a rotation policy wiped them. That is why we split them into dedicated buckets with their own retention periods from the outset.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on volume and bandwidth. Single files return in minutes, while a whole server with a few hundred gigabytes can take hours on a typical line. We time this during the restore drill so the figure is not a surprise on the day it matters.

Most providers encrypt data at rest by default, and we check this when choosing one. For sensitive material, from a medical practice for example, we add encryption before anything leaves your network, so the provider only ever holds unreadable blocks. The key stays with you, plus an offline copy, because losing it means losing the data.

The item people most often forget is retrieval. Some providers charge per gigabyte downloaded, which can hurt during a large restore, while others charge almost nothing. So alongside the monthly storage fee we always tell you what a complete recovery would cost.

The storage needs an entry in your processing register listing provider, region and retention, and you need a processor agreement with the provider. Personal data erased from live systems survives in backups until they expire. That is defensible if it is documented and time-limited, and we provide suitable wording.

The provider charges you directly for storage and any retrieval. Setting it up costs €110 per hour plus VAT; supervision of the jobs and periodic restore drills can form part of a Start, Business or Premium service plan.
